Waitomo caves: frequently asked questions

Forty-five minutes underground. Allow roughly 90 minutes on site once check-in, the walk down and the return through the visitor centre are counted. Departures run every 30 minutes from 9am to 5pm.

The Catacombs, the fluted limestone curtain called the Pipe Organ, the Banquet Chamber, and the Cathedral, a tall domed chamber with acoustics guides sometimes sing in. Then the boat section on the underground Waitomo River, beneath the glowworm colony in the Grotto.

The colony lives there permanently and glows year round, so there is no season when the display switches off. Brightness varies with how hungry the larvae are rather than with the calendar. Nobody can promise a specific density on a specific day.

No. Cameras, phone photography, flash, video and GoPros are all prohibited in the Waitomo Glowworm Cave. Ruakuri Cave and Aranui Cave both allow non-flash photography. Souvenir photos are sold at the visitor centre afterwards, and reviewers are candid about not rating them.

Light disturbs the glowworms, which is also why the guide asks for silence on the boat. The colony is the whole reason the cave is an attraction, and the site manages it actively. The longer explanation covers what light and noise do to a larva that is trying to fish.

The Glowworm Cave is not. It has stairs throughout, with good handrails and formed paths, and suits visitors with reasonable mobility. Ruakuri Cave is the step-free option, entered by a man-made spiral ramp, and accepts wheelchairs and pushchairs up to 65 cm wide.

Shoes with grip and a warm layer. The cave holds a constant 16 °C whatever the weather is doing above ground, which feels cool after a summer day and mild in winter. Paths are damp in places. Nothing waterproof is needed on the standard tour.

Yes, and plenty of people do. The two sites are 83 km apart, about an hour and a quarter, and the Hobbiton tour runs around two hours against 45 minutes at the cave. The timing guide lays out an order that works and one that does not.

May to September. December to February is the New Zealand summer school holiday peak, and the shoulder weeks around April, July and September or October school holidays fill up too. Since the glowworms do not vary with season, picking a month is purely a crowd decision.
