Most people give Waitomo ninety minutes, which is enough for what they came for and misses the point of the place. A full day here is a genuinely good day, and two full-price adult cave tickets can total around NZ$200 per person before food and transport. Here is what it looks like, and here is the shorter version for anyone who cannot spare it.
What Can You Do In One Day At Waitomo?
Two caves, two free limestone walks and a night circuit with glowworms in it. The paid part runs about three and a half hours on site, the free part fills the rest, and you need a car for all of it except the main cave tour.
The one constraint that shapes everything is transport. Ruakuri and Aranui both need your own vehicle from the village, and the natural bridge and waterfall are half an hour west. An Auckland excursion follows its own itinerary; compare the actual inclusions rather than assuming it covers these independent stops.

Why Start At Nine?
An early departure can leave the rest of the day open; group size varies. Check the departure times offered for your date, and coach traffic converges on the middle of the day: Auckland is two and a half hours away, Rotorua two, Hamilton one, and anyone leaving after breakfast arrives between eleven and one.

What Does The Day Cost?

What If You Only Have Ninety Minutes?
Take the tour, skip everything else, and do not feel short-changed. The 45-minute Glowworm Caves tour is what almost everybody comes for, it needs about 90 minutes on site once check-in and the walk down are counted, and it fits into a driving day between Auckland and Rotorua without bending the route.

Is A Full Day Worth It?
If you have a car and any interest in limestone, yes. The district is one geological unit doing one thing for thirty million years, and the results are visible above ground as well as below it: arches, gorges, a waterfall, bluffs breaking through farmland.
The other argument for the full day is the night walk, which is free and is the only version of glowworm viewing where nobody is moving you along. Staying nearby can make an after-dark walk easier, though visitors can also arrange their own return journey. If the budget only stretches to one paid add-on and you are not sure, the free bush walk after dark beats all of them for the specific complaint most people have about the flagship, which is not having enough time under the glowworms.
What Does The Day Look Like Without A Car?
You can reach the main cave from the village on foot; other activities depend on your walking ability or arranged transport. Every other item on a full-day plan needs a vehicle.
