One day in Waitomo, realistically
An hour-by-hour plan for a full day in the district, what it costs, and the honest version for people who only have ninety minutes and a car to get back into.
Most people give Waitomo ninety minutes, which is enough for what they came for and misses the point of the place. A full day here is a genuinely good day, and it costs about NZ$200 for two people including a second cave. Here is what it looks like, and here is the shorter version for anyone who cannot spare it.
What can you do in one day at Waitomo?
Two caves, two free limestone walks and a night circuit with glowworms in it. The paid part runs about three and a half hours on site, the free part fills the rest, and you need a car for all of it except the main cave tour.

Why start at nine?

Take the tour, skip everything else, and do not feel short-changed. The 45-minute Glowworm Caves tour is what almost everybody comes for, it needs about 90 minutes on site once check-in and the walk down are counted, and it fits into a driving day between Auckland and Rotorua without bending the route.
Book a slot in advance rather than turning up. The listing carries a "likely to sell out" flag, and in the December to February peak a walk-up can mean waiting two hours in a village with one café. Is a full day worth it?
If you have a car and any interest in limestone, yes. The district is one geological unit doing one thing for thirty million years, and the results are visible above ground as well as below it: arches, gorges, a waterfall, bluffs breaking through farmland.
The other argument for the full day is the night walk, which is free and is the only version of glowworm viewing where nobody is moving you along.
